We are 40 souls, disadvantaged children placed under the care of Pro Vita Association. We live in a family-type home on the outskirts of the beautiful town of Vălenii de Munte, which you may have heard of. Our house is near the forest, the air is fresh, it's peaceful, and sometimes we see deer, squirrels, foxes, flocks of sheep, and horses passing by. We also have dogs and cats. Sometimes, the sunset is so beautiful that everything looks like a scene from the fairy tales of Petre Ispirescu.
We didn’t come here by choice, but we choose to stay because we feel safe and cared for. Some of us have no families, others have families but cannot meet them, and some maintain contact with their families, but for various reasons, they are unable to raise us.
Here, we have almost everything we need: beautifully decorated rooms, food, clothing, a library with a study space, a kitchen and a large dining hall, a basketball court, toys, bicycles, phones, laptops, and Wi-Fi access.
We are kids just like any other kids; we dream of going to the cinema, to the mall, on school trips and camps, having the latest smartphones, and even braces – because nowadays, it’s “cool” to have braces. We want to go to university, become independent, and contribute to the well-being of future generations.
Since the war in Ukraine began, we have welcomed 26 special Ukrainian children into our home, uprooted overnight from their country. We had to get used to each other and share everything we have. It wasn’t easy, but we learned to understand and accept one another.
We receive help from kind-hearted people and generous companies that ensure our basic needs are met. Some of them have become lifelong friends. We've noticed that those who visit us grow so fond of us and this place that they return frequently to recharge with our positive energy. Many have even built houses nearby just to be close to us.
We have an army of people who take care of us, both employees and volunteers. They are so dedicated that they never leave. We have Melania and Mihail, who make sure we lack nothing; Rux and Carmen, who ensure all our documents are in order, that we attend medical check-ups, and that we have everything we need for school; and Luminița, our cheerful nurse.
Buc, our cook, prepares meals so delicious they make you lick your fingers, and she also gives great advice. Anca and Marius help us with homework – there’s no escaping it no matter how hard we try – and prepare us for exams. Our caretakers are like mothers to us: Gabi, Angi, Cristina, Georgeta, Ramona, Mari, Carmen, Alina, Mihaela. We also have Nea’ Traian, who takes care of our vegetable greenhouses, and many others, whom we hope won’t be upset if we don’t mention them by name.
We also do our part to keep our home running smoothly: we help clean, assist the team, make handmade trinkets and decorations for Easter and Christmas, go caroling, and give back in any way we can to the kind people who help us. We offer them smiles, our attention, and a sense of belonging. We pray for them to stay healthy and strong so they can continue to help us.
